Reflexology
Reflexology is a fascinating science and a very effective form of therapeutic foot massage that plays an important role in the field of complementary therapies.
In refexology specific points on the hands and feet reflect another part of the body. These points, known as reflex points, are linked to the body's internal organs, systems and external structure. By applying pressure to these reflex areas, using specific thumb and finger techniques, you can activate physiological changes withing the body and also stimulate the body's own ability to heal itself.
Benefits of Reflexology:
- Induces a deep sense of relaxation
- Reduces stress and tension
- Increases circulation
- Releases toxic waste, to be expelled faster
- Stimulates the nervous system
- Removes blockages in the system so that energy can flow freely
- Encourages the body to return to a state of balance and equilibrium
- Activates the body's ability to heal and regenerate itself.
What to expect
During a reflexology session, the therapist will ask you various questions to determine your medical history and lifestyle. The session starts with a relaxing footspa and footscrub, followed by the reflex therapy. The therapist will apply
gentle, but firm pressure to the reflex areas of your feet. Some areas may be more sensitive or painful to touch than others, and by working through it, one can restore balance to the related organ or system. Make sure to tell your therapist what you are feeling during the session and if the pressure is too painful. A session usually lasts an hour.
After the treatment
After the session is done, one might experience the following effects:
- deep relaxation
- an emotional release
- light-headedness
- a feeling of elation
- well-being
- increased energy levels
- a good night's sleep
Drink lots of water after a session to flush all the toxins that were released. You should also take it easy for the rest of the day to allow the healing process to have effect. Note that one might experience headache, lethargy or nausea after your first treatment if there was a lot of toxin release taking place. Drinking water will alleviate the symptoms.
